Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport (MFL) was previously known as Chiang Rai Airport before it was granted royal permission by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej to be renamed “Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport.” Today, it is recognized as the “Regional Center for Aviation-related Business,” aiming to become a central hub for aviation-related industries serving the rapidly growing Mekong River Basin countries, as well as Southern China.

Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport is located in Chiang Rai Province, approximately 182 kilometers from Chiang Mai Province. Besides playing a significant role in promoting tourism to the beautiful natural landscapes in the northernmost part of Thailand, AOT has designated Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport as a Regional Center for Aviation-related Business. This role is intended to serve the rapidly growing Mekong sub-region countries and southern China.
In 2017, the airport handled 17,667 flights and 2.5 million passengers, reflecting a growth of 20.91% and 21.93%, respectively, from 2016.
That year, the airport welcomed the highest number of passengers from three key regions: East Asia and the Pacific, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.
